Those children in North Texas who are sick or hurt and need specialized care do not have to travel far to find it. Children’s Medical Center, a private, not-for-profit, pediatric healthcare system, is one of the largest in the nation.  It is the only academic healthcare facility in North Texas dedicated exclusively to the comprehensive care of children from birth to age 18.  Children’s provides care ranging from simple eye exams to specialized treatment in areas such as heart disease, hematology-oncology and cystic fibrosis.  Additionally, Children’s is a major pediatric kidney, liver, intestine, heart and bone marrow transplant center.  It is the primary pediatric teaching facility for The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, and the staff at Children’s is dedicated to research, which is critical to developing treatments, therapies, and broadening the understanding of pediatric diseases.

Children’s is licensed for 411 beds and operates more than 50 subspecialty programs.  The hospital is the only designated Level I trauma center for pediatrics in the Southwest, and to better serve the region’s growing pediatric population, Children’s Medical Center Legacy will open in Plano, Texas in 2008.  Children’s has been recognized as one of the finest pediatric hospitals in the United States, receiving numerous awards.  Both U.S. News & World Report and Child magazines named Children’s one of the nation’s top pediatric providers.

It is important to note that Children’s is a referral hospital, meaning all patients come to the hospital through their personal physician.  Revenue from patient care does not cover the cost of new programs and services, capital improvements or uncompensated care at Children's. A significant portion of this funding is provided by organizations or special events, like the TX TOUGH Tour, and through generous support from local corporations, foundations and individuals.  Patients of Children's have received more than $200 million in uncompensated care in the past five years.  None of this would be possible without the support from others who share the same commitment to making life better for kids!
