What is a Team Captain?
Team Captains are volunteers and the backbone of the Tour. A team’s size and fund-raising success can largely be dependent on who is leading the team. Each team has a designated Team Captain who is often the individual responsible for initiating the creation of the team or the most enthusiastic about participating in the event and willing to take on the responsibility of communicating with all the team members.
What does a Team Captain do?
A Team Captain recruits, organizes and manages the team and its fund-raising efforts. Team Captains also play a vital role as a liaison between the event organizers and participants to ensure important information is communicated. Below we have outlined some of key responsibilities:
Getting the Word Out Early! - One of the most important jobs of a Team Captain is recruiting participants, volunteers and corporate support.
- Recruit key volunteers and/or Co-Captains to help manage, motivate and communicate with team members.
- Display TX TOUGH Tour collateral material around your office, church campus, break-rooms, gym or fitness center, as well as other high traffic areas. Include your name and contact information so people interested in joining the team or volunteering can contact you or event organizers to get involved.
- Encourage people who prefer not to actively participate in stages to volunteer. Create opportunities for volunteers to support the team or get them in touch with event organizers so they can be a part of producing the event.
- Get the team information on company agendas during staff meetings so you can discuss participation and team fund-raising goals. When executives and/or management show support, employees follow.
- Speak to Human Resources about assistance with recruiting and potential corporate support.
- Submit post event information, photos and feedback for inclusion in corporate newsletters.
Setting Team Goals: Fund-Raising / Participation
- Initiate the goal setting by establish the number of people you want to recruit. If the team is open to non-employees, encourage existing team members to recruit family members and friends.
- Work with your Human Resource Department or Management to create a company matching program or some sort of incentive that rewards employees for getting involved.
- Provide progress information relative to fund-raising and recruitment goals as part of efforts to motivate existing team members.
Internal Team Communication
- Create, organize and/or facilitate the use of technology allowing the team members to stay informed and/or communicate with each other. This will keep the team motivated and focused.
- Organize routine face-to-face interaction, which might include training workouts, safety clinics and/or informational meetings. Recommended workouts, training programs and route information will be available on the tour's website for download to all registered participants.
- Maintain and distribute an updated roster so team members know who has joined the effort and new team members feel welcomed.
Coordinate Sign-Up, Kick-Off, and Fund-Raising Parties
- Host a kick-off party and sign-up party. Invite interested or potential participants. Promote as an opportunity to find out more about the team and the fund-raising requirements.
- Organize team fund-raising events to help individuals raise money and the team to surpass fund-raising goals.
